The âtrapâ described by the judge had been set by the Christian Science Church itself, in its advocacy and lobbying for religious exemption laws. Believing that the laws would freely allow parents to provide Christian Science treatment instead of medical treatment no matter what the consequences, Church officials had urged Scientists to radically rely on their religion. But, in fact, the state statutes could not legally protect Christian Science parents from prosecution and, in some cases, conviction. The exemptions for which Scientists had fought so hardâthe same exemptions that made them feel safe in staking their childrenâs lives on their religionâwould spare them little.
